Laser vs. Waxing vs. Shaving – who’s the real winner?

Laser vs. Waxing vs. Shaving – who’s the real winner?

Laser vs. waxing vs. shaving – which one really wins? We weigh up the pros and cons of each hair removal method.

Laser Hair Removal

How It Works:

Laser hair removal works by emitting a specific wavelength of light to target the hair follicle at the root. It essentially destroys the follicle, meaning it can achieve permanent hair reduction. On average, the hair in treated areas falls out within 2-3 weeks.

Pros:

Laser is the best solution for long-term hair reduction and removal. Laser hair removal causes no damage to the dermis, so even the most sensitive skin can be treated.

Cons:

Some may experience some heat on the skin post-treatment however, Laser Clinics New Zealand laser therapists provide  Laser Aid post-treatment to remove heat from the skin and we also use an advanced cooling system to maintain optimum comfort levels.

Prices can start at $10, depending on the treatment area, with an average of 8-10 treatments recommended, for optimum results. Several treatments are recommended to capture the hair follicles at different stages of the growth cycle.

Waxing

How It Works:

Hot wax is applied to the treatment area and removed in the opposite direction of the hair growth, pulling hairs out from the root. *1,2,3 hold your breath and think good thoughts*.

Pros:

Temporarily removes hair at the root for an average of three weeks. While the results last longer than shaving, results are nowhere near as effective as laser hair removal.

Cons:

Hair removal is temporary, and you’ll need to keep waxing indefinitely. Waxing requires some regrowth in order to be effective which means you’re going to need to sport some prickly hair for a while. Wax need a few millimetres of stubble to adhere to. Treatments can be moderately painful, as hair is indeed being ripped out at the root. Not to mention, you’re still at risk of developing those pesky ingrown hairs.

Average Cost:

It ranges anywhere from $35-80 for salon waxing, depending on areas waxed and your salon of choice. Waxing costs really add up over time, particularly when compared to the permanency of laser hair removal.

Shaving

How It Works:

Shaving removes hair at the skin’s surface by cutting it off with a razor.

Pros:

It’s cheap and quick but it’s also the most irritating and temporary method of hair removal.

Cons:

Regrowth happens immediately - the minute you put down the razor, that hair is growing back! Since hair is cut off at the surface, hair regrowth is blunt, not tapered, so it can appear thicker. Razor burn, cuts, rashes and ingrown hairs are all possibilities of shaving.

Average Cost:

Razors and shaving cream can be purchased at most supermarkets and pharmacies for around $20-$30, depending on the brand.
